Lent Studies 2010

During the Season of Lent it is customary to attend a study or discussion group to reflect on our faith.  This year St Matthew's parishioners have the opportunity to attend two studies: "The Lord's Prayer" and "Jesus Now", as well as a Quiet Day.

1. The Lord's Prayerprayer_hands

Bishops John Bluck and Muru Walters have published a short study booklet on the Lord's Prayer.

We shall use this booklet as a basis for some study gatherings here at St Matthew's during Lent.

You are invited to a parish evening on Thursday 18th to ponder this prayer.

The booklets in English and Maori, with striking colour photographs, are now available from the Vicar or the Parish Office - $10.00 per copy.

2. Jesus, Now!

This year we join with others across the Diocese to consider "Jesus, Now."  This is a series based on four current movies through which the Jesus of our time and place can challenge us on issues of social justice, peacemaking, biblical and theological critique and simply  who and where Jesus is in our midst.  An opportunity to study the passion of Christ, the cost of discipleship and different understandings of servant and community leadership.

We are invited to watch these four DVDs:

Place: St Luke's Lounge

Time:  6.30pm

Dates: On consecutive Sundays from 21 February to 14 March.

Each movie: "The Bands Visit", Pay it Forward", "Molokai" and "Lars and the Real Girl" will have a scripture for reflection and suggested questions to help focus study and reflection individually or as a group discussion.

In the series, participants are asked to see Jesus; as the suffering servant in a Pacific Island Leper colony, as “the little child shall lead them” in a story of a child’s unshakeable faith, as the transforming love in human relationships, and as the peace that can break down interfaith walls that divide. The films open up issues of social justice, peacemaking, who and where is Jesus, biblical and theological critique.

3. Quiet Daycross and shadow

Val Chapman is hosting a Quiet Day on Saturday 20 March.  The day will include reflections, prayers and silence relating to Easter.

We are invited to attend this Quiet Day:

Place: All Saint's Church, 23 Puketapu Road, Taradale

Time: 9.30am - 3.30pm

Cost: $15.00 or koha

Please bring a bible, notebook and your own lunch.
